All flights bound for New York-area airports have been halted due to a staffing shortage because of employees testing positive for coronavirus.
Flights bound for major airports — including Newark Liberty International Airport, Laguardia Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport — have been stopped effective immediately, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
All flights have also been halted going into Philadelphia International Airport, as well as smaller airports in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The FAA said the full-stop on arriving flights is due to "staffing issues." The worker shortage is due to a slew of airport workers who recently tested positive for coronavirus, the COVID-19 disease, according to the editor in chief of The Air Current.
Arriving flights will be halted "until the FAA can figure out what departure gates are available," authorities said.
Flights currently airborne will be diverted or sent back to their original destination.
